Ram's Horn supplement, or Gymnema sylvestre is a slow-growing woody climbing plant native to the tropical forests of Central and Southern India, and parts of Africa. The elliptical or ovate leaves of the plant are made into capsules and liquid extracts that are commonly available at several natural food and drug stores in the United States. The ancient health science of Ayurveda uses Ram's Horn supplements to treat conditions such as diabetes, high cholesterol, indigestion, constipation, cough, asthma, inflammation, eye diseases and malaria. Some studies have also highlighted the antioxidant benefits of the supplement.
Ram's Horn for Fitness
Ram's Horn has been used traditionally to achieve healthy blood glucose levels, and to promote efficient fat metabolism by lowering the blood triglyceride and cholesterol levels. Some studies, such as the one published in the May 2004 issue of the journal "Diabetes, Metabolism and Obesity," have supported the use of Ram's Horn as a weight loss supplement. Although there are no studies to indicate the benefits of this supplement in building and toning muscles, an animal study in the June 2001 issue of the journal "Biological and Pharmaceutical Bulletin" states that Ram's Horn may reduce the cravings for sugars, an important step in achieving your fitness goals.
How Does It Work?
A chemical known as gymnemic acid found in the supplement has a structure similar to that of glucose. The enzymes and glucose receptors in your body mistake these molecules to be glucose and absorb them instead. This leads to reduced absorption and storage of the actual sugar in your body, and thereby lowers your risk of obesity. The role of Ram's Horn supplements in other disease has not yet been evaluated scientifically.
Side Effects
Ram's Horn supplements are generally safe to use, especially when you follow the recommendations of your doctor or herbalist. It is best to take the herb with food as it may cause mild gastrointestinal problems when taken on empty stomach. Very high doses of the supplement can lead to extremely low levels of sugars in your body along with symptoms such as weakness, dizziness and disorientation. It is not know if Ram Horn interferes with other bodybuilding supplements. It is best to use the supplement under the supervision of a doctor, especially if you are taking any medications.
