Pumping Iron was released in 1977, it is a documentary of bodybuilding training and competition, which leads up to the 1975 Mr. Olympia and Mr. Universe Contests. Its main focus is the larger than life muscles and personality of a young Arnold Schwarzenegger.
I first saw Pumping Iron on TV back in 1978 when I was 16 years old. I got so excited I jumped down on the floor and started doing push ups right after the movie was over. I became hooked to bodybuilding after that, and from that time all the stars of the movie (Arnold Schwarzenegger, Lou Ferringo, Robbie Robinson, Mike Katz, Ken Waller, Serge Nubret, Franco Columbu, Ed Corney, Frank Zane) have been my inspiration and motivation.
If you’re into bodybuilding this movie is a classic and deserves to be recognized as the greatest bodybuilding movie of all time. It is one of the most motivating movies I have ever seen. Whenever I lack inspiration to really push myself in the gym, I watch some scenes from Pumping Iron and then I am ready to workout and give it my all. Pumping Iron shows that in order to achieve success in anything you must be willing to push yourself more than your competition. Arnold was right when he said "You must be willing to push yourself through and beyond the pain barrier in order to get bigger".
Pumping Iron is about the heart and soul of bodybuilding. It captures the passion, drive and innocence of the then unknown sub culture called bodybuilding.
Pumping Iron 25th Anniversary DVD
I recently watched the 25th Anniversary edition of this DVD and even though the events take place over 30 years ago, it is still relevant today. After watching a poor copy on VHS for years, it is a great pleasure to own a crystal clear, remastered DVD version. Featuring grueling training sessions, great interviews with the stars, and "the Battle of the giants" at the 1975 Mr. Olympia contest - Pumping Iron is still a motivation powerhouse.
The 25th Anniversary Edition includes insightful and candid interviews that help put this classic into perspective. What a bonus it is to see some of the stars as they are today, discussing the impact of this wonderful film on their lives and the lives of the fans. Pumping Iron never fails to motivate me to go to the gym, and this new version entertains and motivates while adding another dimension to the experience. This is storytelling at its finest.
The new 25th Anniversary Special Edition DVD includes:
Pumping Iron Documentary Full Movie
You get the full-uncut documentary that follows the top bodybuilders leading up to the 1975 Mr Universe & Mr Olympia contests. Watch them all training hard, posing down and trying to "psych out" their opponents
Pumping Iron Extras
Not only is the original uncut Pumping Iron full movie worth purchasing in and of itself on DVD, but also the extra features on this 25th anniversary special edition are awesome! It is loaded with special features and behind the scenes footage of the making of the Pumping Iron. The special feature on the making of "Pumping Iron" is as enjoyable to me as the actual film itself.
Pumping Iron Raw Iron: The Making of Pumping Iron
A documentary on the making of Pumping Iron to celebrate its 25th anniversary. Includes exclusive outtakes and an interview reunion with the original bodybuilders and director.
Pumping Iron Behind the Scenes
Learn what it took to get Pumping Iron made. See the problems encountered by the filmmakers during shooting. It's amazing to see that some of the movie was actually made up to make the full more interesting. If you are a fan of the film, you need to get this to see how much true info was left out.
In Iron Insights Schwarzenneger tells which scenes were created and which were actual events. Arnold dispels many of the myths surrounding the move and also tells you what was true: Was Mike Katz's t-shirt stolen? Did they use steroids? Did Arnold smoke a joint? Did he inhale? IS the pump better then cuming?
Pumping Iron Outtakes
It was great to see the outtakes (they filmed over a hundred hours originally) and I hope that someday they release all the outtakes. I would buy them all, even as a rough cut, in a heartbeat because those were the golden days of bodybuilding.
Pumping Iron Deleted Scenes
Some of the deleted scenes include:
A fan asking Arnold when he's going to run for president.
The bodybuilders go out to lunch, see how "normal people" react to them.
Arnold visits with his idol Reg Park.
The bodybuilders partying at Arnold bachelor pad.
Arnold tries to train skinny actor Bud Cort of Harold and Maude fame.
Charles Gaines tries to get Arnold the cold unfeeling machine to open up and show some real emotion.
Pumping Iron Where Are They Now
All the bodybuilders and filmmakers are interviewed, looking back 25 years ago to what really happened. It's great to be able to see these bodybuilders as they are these days and to hear their feeling on the glory days of bodybuilding and the friendships they all have that still endure to this day. It's great seeing all the stars of the film come back 25 years later and talking about what pumping iron meant to them. Lou Ferrigno is still in fantastic shape, too bad he didn't challenge Arnold to a rematch!
