Losing weight generally requires that you burn more calories than you take in over a certain period of time. For most, this means diet and exercise, but there ARE other ways to boost the number of calories you burn on a daily basis if you want to maximize your energy expenditure.
Here are five of those tricks that can give you an extra edge when trying to get lean.
When you drink water, even if it’s no colder than room temperature, your body must warm it up to 98.6 degrees Fahrenheit, your internal temp. And heating water requires energy. The fact is, you may burn only a few extra calories by drinking more water, but you also SAVE calories if you drink that water in place of other liquids like juice or soda.
It may sound cliche, but, when you have the choice, try taking the stairs instead of the elevator. Similarly, don’t worry too much about finding “close” parking spots, but enjoy the calorie-burning walk from your car to the office or mall or wherever it is you’re going.
The point is that you should try to introduce more movement into your day if you want to maximize calorie burn, and these little bits here and there can add up. Besides, you almost always feel better overall when you move more rather than less.
Similar to the above point, try to find a way to stand when you’re in front of the computer. This is especially true if you spend most of your day at a desk, and the extra calories that you burn from stabilizing your body while standing can get you at least a smidge closer to your fat-loss goals.
While you may already be hitting the weights hard and doing three or four cardio sessions a week, that doesn’t necessarily mean you can’t add even MORE activity to your routine without risking overtraining. Recreational activities like basketball or hiking certainly burn calories, but so can yoga, with the added benefit of increasing your flexibility. Beware, though, because yoga can be intense and uncomfortable, and you definitely need to check with your doctor before you begin a stringent routine.
If you lift weights in any fashion at all, then you’re probably already interested in building muscle, but the fact is that adding lean mass is one of the best ways you have of boosting your metabolism. Muscle is “active” all the time, so it’s always burning calories, even if you are just crashing on the sofa. Lift hard, add some meat to your bones, and you WILL burn more calories.
These tips won’t get you ripped over night, but they are great examples of the little changes you can make to maximize the number of calories you burn. And, over time, every little bit helps.
