You will hear from all the top bodybuilders all over the world that it comes down to intensity and that you need to train hard and intense if you want to put on muscle. But there is no doubt about it that this philosophy has been taken a bit far when it comes to "squat till you puke" type of training. One needs to always be aware of the limitations of the body. In fact that is what good bodybuilding is all about as you are having a conversation with your own body in exploring the extremes. But it certainly can get insane when you watch some people train. If you are aware that your body really does have limits then you will be able to use your workouts to explore those limits and not to go crazy about taking those limits to the extreme. If you end up running to the toilet to puke after every giant set you complete then you are training too hard. The problem is that one needs to get to a balance where you can know when you are going too far and when you need to push yourself harder. There are some bodybuilders that go to the gym in order to punish themselves and they will train hard and fast without stopping. They do this because it has proven itself to work and there is no doubt about it that intensity works as all bodybuilders will assure you. But one still needs to achieve some sanity when training intensely because that is the only way that you are going to continue getting results. But every person is different and there are some bodybuilders that plot every workout with extreme precision. When Arnold and Franco first came to train in California they used to add up the total amount of weight that was lifted during their workouts. The reason they did this was so that they could record how many tons of weight they had lifted in total during the workout and that the objective was to increase that total weight lifted. There are many ways that you can plot and structure your workouts; the bottom line is that you need a plan. There are people who think that anyone who goes to a gym in order to gain muscle is crazy so everything is relative. In order to make sure that you are on a path that is getting you results you need to have a way of measuring your improvements and recording them.
