Dumbbell bench press vs. bar bench press

Posted by: Keith

I recently switched from barbell bench press to doing the dumbbell bench press for a change of pace. But can you answer a question for me. Does bench pressing with dumbbells increase your flat bench press with the bar?

If your objective is to increase your bench-press with free weights then the answer is yes. Training with dumbbells will be able to increase your bench-press but one should make sure that you are doing dumbbell exercises after you have done bench-press so that you are able to correctly monitor your bench-press maximum. The end result will be that your chest will get a fully developed look as you will be using and developing all the other stabilizing muscle groups like Rhomboids, Deltoids, lats as well as general strengthening of your ability to lift a weight. Training this way will help you always keep a look out for reaching a plateau and stopping your progression.
