Benching Techniques

Hi, I am 15 years of age and i weight about 165 lbs. I am 6' 1". I was taught to only bench every 3 days to give my muscles a rest.I was also taught to bench with heavy weights and a low amount of reps. I was just wondering if that is the best way of lifting for me if i would like to gain weight and hard muscle?
