Interview With MsFit Karen Sessions

Q. Can you give us some background about yourself?

A. I've been in the fitness industry since 1988. Since my introduction to working out and bodybuilding, I got totally engrossed and really loved learning, researching, implementing trial and errors, etc.

Q. What got you started in bodybuilding?

A. I got into working out to overcome an eating disorder, anorexia. My working out and eating right lead to me getting involved in women's bodybuilding and competing for several years.

Q. What is it about bodybuilding that you love so much?

A. I really love lifting heavy weights and manipulating training, diet, and cardio to spark changes in my physique. It's interesting the control you really can have over your body. I also love prepping others for bodybuilding contests.

Q. What adversities have you had to overcome?

A. My main adversity was overcoming anorexia. It was a mild case, so beating it with bodybuilding really didn't seem too hard for me. My major problem is I'm a hard gainer to adding scale weight after the eating disorder was a chore.

Q. What are your favorite and least favorite exercises?

A. I use to not like training certain muscle groups because they were weaker. However, I've built my weak body parts and have them up to par with the rest of my body. I would have to say as of now, my favorite body part to train is back because I want to add more thickness. My least favorite exercise, although a great one, is close-bench presses for tricpes.

Q. What has been your favorite bodybuilding moment so far?

A. My favorite bodybuilding moment so far has been competing. I would have to say my first show was my favorite because I was doing what I set out to do and there was no pressue. After that show, the pressure was on to place better.

Q. What are your tips for the beginner, intermediate and advanced?

A.Tips for beginners would be to start out basic, maybe use machines to get the feel of each exercise, go a few more exercises, reps, and sets... Also, don't listen to too many peoople.

Intermediate bodybuilders will benefit with taking the exercises, sets, and reps down a notch and merge on to more free weights; again, don't listen to too many people.

Tips for advanced bodybuilders are again, take the exercises, set, and reps down a notch and put a lot of focus on anaerobic intenstity and rest.

Bottom line for all lifters, don't get caught up in a whirlwind of information by listening to too many people.

Q. Where do you stand on the use of steroids and supplements?

A. think supplements are beneficial, but what makes the work in the quality of yoru diet and timing the supplements. I pretty much keep to a basic supplement stack of creatine, glutamine, BCAA's and HMB when dieting down, meal replacements and whey, and cycling thermos when necessary.

Steroids is a touchy issue. I'm not a promoter of them because I think you can make dramatic changes with proper diet and basic supplements. I feel if you choose to use steroids, educate yourself fully before taking that risk. The bottom line, there is use and there is abuse, as with anything.

Q. What are your future goals?

A. My future goals are to expand my websites and continue to educate the ladies about female bodybuilding; how to build muscle. I'd love to compete again, but my business and clientel are so demanding and stressful at the moment. I know what it takes to compete mentally and physically, and I'm just not ready for that at this moment.

Q. What is the toughest part about bodybuilding for you?

A.The toughest part about bodybuilding is the strictness. I can do it, but it must come first... Everything else comes second. It's tough putting your family, business, and life second.

Q. Is there anything else you would like to say?

A. If you have a goal to bodybuild, transform, or compete; Do It! There's nothing like it in the world. Some people think they are too old, but age is just a number. I've put a 50 year old lady in a bodybuilding contest and she did great! There's no reason you shouldn't tackle your goals if you have them inside you. If you fail to go after your dream, you will regreat it.
